Bye Bye Sharon

When our little intern, Sharon (the gal in the green jacket) left…sweet gal bought all of us a Minnie Mouse cushion as a farewell gift.

Bless her…..

pretty good day with a short person

sleeping with mouse

He had a couple of melt-downs over his shoes this morning. He couldn't get them on right. He wanted to do it himself. But we got him sorted in the end.
We went to the library and we also went to the bakery. We go there once a month where he can get a happy face cookie. He calls them. Mr. Happy Cookies. (as they do look a bit like a Mr. Men) When I went to pay for it, he sat himself down at a table and waited patiently. He pointed out a picture of the Space Needle. (Space noodle) We later went for a short walk along Lake Washington and he pointed out the big bridge.
He didn't really nap today, but he was all right for the most part. I was reading Snuggle Puppy to him today and he said, "Oh I like this book so much!" He played in his wading pool and helped me water the garden. He brought out all of his stuffed friends onto the sofa and we watched Max & Ruby.

Two isn't too bad. He is definitely independent and strong-willed like me. He wants to do it all himself. Just ask him. "NO! I WILL DO IT!" (okay then pal.) But he is one cuddly little bunny. He greets me every morning with hugs and kisses.

At night I come in and remove the excess toys from his bed (he hoards all kinds of interesting things under the covers) and straighten him out. (he migrates more than grey whales) I give him a kiss on his head.

  • i went to the denver art museum with marream today; on the way there some guy stopped me in the street and asked to take my picture. i guess it will show up on his site http://www.iheartstrangers.com ; he is doing a project where he takes a photo of a stranger every day and writes a narrative about it. i think he told me that he'd just bought some purple jeans, & at one point he asked me to wipe an eyelash off my face, but i just realized it was part of my bangs, cause i trimmed them before i left the house. it is hard to keep them triangular
  • yesterday i bought 40 limes to makes lots of limeade
  • and went to the dentist; i have to go back to get a cracked filling replaced. hopefully not a root canal. it is the same stupid tooth i had problems with 3 years ago
  • teeth are the most disgusting things ever: they are BONES that stick out of yr flesh. ughggh i am glad that the cracked filling is all that is wrong tho. i get nervous that i will have 5,000 cavities but i didn't have any! yay.
  • at the art museum there is a really cool piece (Fox Games, Sandy Skoglund) that you walk through that is like... grey foxes prancing & leaping & having a party in a restaurant where everything is red, with a sing red fox and an old, 1930s 3 headed lady's fox stole draped over the back of a chair. it was magic, especially with these star trek sounds coming from a nearby video exhibit, and the sounds of drums from the african exhibit in the balcony above. oh, & a piece that was 4 super long purple velvet robes handing against a slanted wall so that their shadow was even longer behind them.
  • last night poly jumped out the window (she gets out on the roof and climbs down the tree) and we couldn't find her for awhile, but then she climbed back up the tree and came inside. her feet were all damp cause the sprinklers were on outside

TGIF!

One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to his buddy, Norm. "Well ya see, Norm, it’s like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first.

This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.

Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine!

That’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

Sean found a garter snake in our yard. I was so excited, because Sean always sees them and then they slither away before I can see them, let alone take a picture!

no particular order

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 8:15 AM
I sort of feel this urge to nest but it is manifesting itself in inane ways. I am looking at interesting contact paper to put down in my kitchen shelves. Nothing like a random obsession with contact paper and shelf liners. I also re-organized some of the shelves and tidied them up a bit. I need a new duster to get rid of the ceiling cobwebs.
Really my problem is that I look at Apartment Therapy and I suddenly want new bedding or something. "yeah. Bedding. Lighting. That will make things better"

I have child-care pretty much lined up/sorted for Senor Onion. I am meeting with a doula next week. So those things aren't hanging over my head as much.

Now to look over the list of things that need to be attended to and whatever.

My latest grand idea, since cupcake shops have been done to death and really cupcakes are passe (yes if you like them eat them. for feck's sake.) I think it is time we moved into brownie shops. I discussed this with a friend yesterday. The options are unlimited. There can even be something for the vegans/people with dietary issues. There can be brownies with frosting/glaze and sans all that jazz. Brownies with stuff in them. Brownies that are simple and bare. Plus blondies and peanut butter brownies. You know a brownie shop would be awesome. Even brownie bites for the short set. Brownies and some nice beverages. If you were really feeling wild you could have a shop that offered brownie sundaes. But only if you were feeling ambitious. Brownies. This should be the next great American fetish.

Now for the serious questions:
Should I make peach ice cream or nectarine ice cream?

3 Weeks of Slack-Ness

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 2:34 PM

The last 3 weeks has been really insane at work…I haven’t had a chance to fit in a run or any form of exercise.  I was majorly deprived of sleep.

Last night, I did my first run in 3 weeks…and can I say…it was HORRID.  My fitness has gone down the drain, and I am pretty much where I started when I first started exercising.

I struggled to completely my 5.5km jog…the walk and slow jog took me 50 minutes!!  And it real determination to complete it.  Thank goodness I had my mistress of Play with me…and well he jogging all the way spurred me to complete it.

Now that work has eased a little, no more excuses, I am going to get fit again…I have a 6km race next month!  I need to buck up!

Missed out

  • Jul. 9th, 2009 at 2:09 PM

Was meant to go with friends for a weekend getaway....unfortunately that wasn't a good idea all thanks to H1N1....received some pictures of the holiday....I missed out!  I love beach holidays, and this would have been a perfect break!

Thank goodness...I have a break next weekend....I can't wait!
An interesting interview with Howard Dean about health care and the need for a public health care option. He has some radical ideas and he has some weight with this argument as he used to be a practicing doctor and his wife is a doctor so the dude knows the reality of the situation. He talks not just about the uninsured but the millions of Americans who have the shitty health insurance plan that they can barely afford and they barely use because it will still cost them tons of money. You know the plan I am talking about. The "not seeing the doctor unless the limb has fallen off" plan.

Call/email your Senator. (handy-dandy link to find the names of the Senators in your state and how to contact them) Even if it is a short note to say, "I support the health care option." The fact is if they get a certain number of calls/emails about it, it usually indicates a greater number of people care about a subject. (and it pushes them to take up the cause in a more vocal manner) Lean on their hesitant asses if you care about this. Even if you have super awesome health insurance, a good public option could lower costs and premiums in the end. But most don't have decent health insurance. Most are stuck with health insurance that finds fun ways to get more money out of you and deny you coverage for certain things. And it is nonsense. Pure nonsense.

Thought of The Day

What is the main reason Santa is so jolly?
He knows where all the bad girls live

parenting drivel

I recently read some blog post where a Mother had concerns about her daughter playing with Barbie. Her kid is three, she let her have a barbie from the thrift store and she felt really uncomfortable because she dislikes Barbie and all that it is associated with it. She has concerns about things like body dysmorphia and so on. (blah-di-blah blah women's studies stuff) She wanted advice on finding some more body-friendly dolls and so on.

A few thoughts )

moving along

I feel the urge to go on a canning bender this weekend. I definitely want to make raspberry jam and I want to possibly make another kind of jam. I want to see what fruit looks the most appealing and see how many jars I have available.
Tonight I made a potato mash using potatoes from the garden. Excellent flavor. (helps to add things like butter and chevre) I was awfully pleased.
I have also harvested garlic. The garden is beginning to do its thing. I cleaned the garlic and have begun the curing process. I will have more to harvest soon. (I might hand out heads of garlic to people. "here have some. It is good for you.") I need to look at the onions as well.

I finished that Garrison Keillor book last night. The ending is fantastic. Just what I wanted.

Tomorrow I will bake brownies. Senor Onion pointed out we were about to run out. He keeps a close eye on the brownie rations in this house.

I felt better today -despite the fact that most of my clothes are uncomfortable. I was able to accomplish a few things and not feel absolutely wrecked. And Senor Onion napped. He just needed extra cuddles before going to sleep. I understand that.
some of you all already saw this, but now it is official, so:

These are the titles of the five manuscripts that are finalists for the 6th Starcherone Prize for Innovative Fiction:

> 200 Pieces
> The Balloon Comtaining the Water Containing the Narrative is Leaking
> Glamorous Freak: How I Taught My Dress to Act
> The Orange Eats Creeps
> Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls

These manuscripts, with the authors' names remaining undisclosed, have been forwarded to Final Judge Ben Marcus, who will select one winner of the Starcherone Prize for 2009. The winner will receive a $1,000 prize and be published in our 2010-11 season.

The Final Judge has the option of selecting additional manuscripts from which to make a selection.

This year's contest began with 210 entries, and our decisions to date have been extremely difficult, owing to the high quality of the submissions. Many terrific books had to be eliminated from contention, simply due to the limitations of the contest and what we are able to accomplish as a small press. In order to help promote some of these worthy manuscripts, a number of other entries will be designated with Honorable Mentions. These will be announced when our final decisions are announced, in early August. Please check this blog for an announcement in late July or after.

Harvest

garlic harvest

I just pulled some garlic out of my garden. (there is plenty more) I need to clean it and cure it next. I may have to give some of it away. For now the scent is filling my kitchen. It is fantastic. I planted this last Fall. It slowly grew through the winter snow storms and the wet Spring. I will definitely have fun with this stuff. I wish everyone could smell my kitchen right now.
